Executive Summary

The inaugural LTN Fleet 100 provides a data-led snapshot of Britain’s commercial vehicle market using specified vehicle totals recorded on operator licences.

Analysing 64,448 operator records, the research demonstrates that while the UK transport sector is built upon thousands of small and medium-sized operators, a relatively small number of enterprise fleets account for a significant proportion of commercial vehicles in operation.

The findings highlight the diversity of organisations that depend on large vehicle fleets, from logistics providers and parcel carriers to supermarkets, utilities, construction businesses, environmental services and passenger transport operators.

Introduction

For the first time, Logistics & Transport Network (LTN) has analysed 64,448 operator records to identify Britain’s largest commercial vehicle fleets.

Using operator licence data, the LTN Fleet 100 ranks operators by the number of specified vehicles recorded against their licences, providing one of the most comprehensive snapshots of active commercial vehicle fleets across Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

The analysis covers logistics, distribution, parcel delivery, retail, construction, environmental services, utilities and passenger transport.

04

Britain’s Largest Commercial Vehicle Fleets

The inaugural LTN Fleet 100 is headed by some of the UK’s best-known fleet operators, including major logistics providers, parcel delivery companies, retailers, waste management specialists and public transport operators.

Together these fleets represent a substantial proportion of Britain’s commercial vehicle activity and demonstrate the diversity of sectors that rely on professional fleet operations.

05

A Market Built on Small Operators

Despite the visibility of Britain’s largest fleets, the commercial vehicle market remains dominated by SMEs.

More than 46,000 operators specify five vehicles or fewer, while fewer than 700 operators specify more than 100 vehicles.

This demonstrates that the market is made up of thousands of independent businesses supported by a comparatively small number of enterprise fleets.

06

What the Data Means for Fleet Suppliers

Beyond identifying Britain’s largest fleets, the data provides valuable insight into where demand for fleet products and services is likely to be concentrated.

The UK commercial vehicle sector is not one homogeneous market. It consists of thousands of smaller operators alongside a relatively small group of large fleets responsible for a significant share of the vehicles operating on UK roads.

As fleet size increases, demand also grows for fleet insurance, telematics, fuel cards, maintenance, tyres, driver recruitment, Driver CPC training, fleet management software, EV charging infrastructure, depot energy solutions and route optimisation technologies.

Methodology

The LTN Fleet 100 has been compiled using UK operator licence data.

Rankings are based on the number of specified vehicles recorded against each operator licence.

Where organisations hold multiple operator licences, records are aggregated at operator level. Figures represent a snapshot of operator licence data and will be updated periodically.
